The First Modules Arrive

The First Modules Arrive

December 23, 2025

Just before the end of the year, the Cedar River Valley reached an exciting milestone: the first module sections arrived on December 23rd, built by Dan Benjamin of the River Rail Operations group. Up to this point, most of the work had focused on the Zone 2 shelf and the early shaping of the layout’s identity, but seeing the first freestanding modules come through the door made the project feel suddenly larger, more tangible, and undeniably real. These sections marked the moment when the Cedar River Valley began expanding beyond the initial benchwork and into the modular footprint that will define Zones 1 and 3.

Dan’s craftsmanship and attention to detail were immediately evident. The frames were square, solid, and built with the kind of precision that makes tracklaying and scenery work a joy instead of a fight. Having someone from the River Rail group contribute to the physical foundation of the layout added a meaningful layer of connection—this railroad may be a one‑person build, but it’s shaped by a community of people who care deeply about operations, realism, and good design. Dan’s modules set a high standard for everything that will follow.

With the new sections in place, the layout suddenly had room to breathe. The footprint of the C&NW Yard in Zone 1 became easier to visualize, and the future home of the Heileman Brewery in Zone 3 began to take shape in the mind’s eye. The arrival of these modules didn’t just expand the physical layout; it expanded the project’s momentum. Benchwork that once existed only on paper or in planning software now stood in the room, ready for cork, track, and the first steps toward full operations.

As the year draws to a close, these modules represent both progress and possibility. They bridge the gap between the early construction of the Zone 2 shelf and the larger vision of a fully realized 1968 C&NW switching layout. With Dan’s contribution anchoring the next phase of the build, the Cedar River Valley enters the new year with a stronger foundation—and a renewed sense of excitement for what comes next.
