Cedar River Valley

An S Scale Modular Railroad based on the Driftless Region

Zone 1 - The CNW Yard

Zone 1 - The CNW Yard

Zone 1 represents the Chicago & North Western yard in La Crosse, modeled as faithfully as possible to its 1968 configuration. This section of the layout serves as the operational anchor for the entire Cedar River Valley, providing the classification, staging, and locomotive servicing functions that support the work in Zones 2 and 3. The yard’s design is based directly on historical maps, photographs, and track charts, allowing it to capture the geometry, proportions, and working character of the real facility.

Construction of the yard began with careful benchwork planning to ensure the ladder tracks, yard leads, and service areas aligned exactly with the prototype. Because the yard is both visually open and operationally demanding, precision in tracklaying was essential. Each turnout, curve, and track centerline was positioned to reflect the real C&NW arrangement, creating a yard that feels authentic not only in appearance but also in the way trains move through it.

One of the defining features of Zone 1 is the locomotive servicing area, including the engine house and associated tracks. While the layout adheres closely to the prototype, one intentional modification was made: the approach to the engine house was reversed to improve operational flow within the modular footprint. This adjustment preserves the spirit and function of the original facility while allowing the model to operate more smoothly in its S scale modular context.

Scenery and ground surfaces in the yard are planned to reflect the gritty, utilitarian environment of a working 1960s railroad facility. Ballast tones, cinder paths, service roads, and subtle variations in ground texture help convey the wear and activity typical of a yard that handled daily switching, locomotive movements, and interchange traffic. Structures and details were added gradually, each chosen to reinforce the era and the C&NW’s distinctive presence in La Crosse.

As the first zone of the Cedar River Valley, the C&NW Yard sets the tone for the entire layout. It establishes the operational logic that drives the rest of the railroad, from classifying cars for the Zone 2 industrial district to supporting the brewery traffic in Zone 3. Built entirely by a single modeler, Zone 1 reflects the project’s core values: prototype accuracy, thoughtful design, and a deep respect for the railroading history of La Crosse in 1968.
